And now battery chemistry has evolved to the point where sodium-ion batteries have similar energy densities to their lithium competitors. In addition, the sodium-ion battery is lighter, safer, cheaper and cleaner than lithium-ion batteries. Chinese battery makers, such as CATL and BYD, have started mass production and will even use sodium-ion batteries in electric cars.
